After the Storm

We made it! My prayers and hopes are with all of our clients and friends who are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Ike! The storm came right across us up here near Conroe. It was a scary night and day. We had several large trees come down. Our barn is a pile of rubble! We haven't had horses in over a year, so it was unoccupied, at least! The house was undamaged, and our family is healthy and safe. After nearly a week, the power is on. That's a blessing!

My heart's broken from watching all the devastation from this horrible storm. I'm praying for all the families affected in such tragic ways.

Family Reunion Portraits

Summer and Holidays are a wonderful time to schedule a Family Reunion Portrait. This extended session allows for multiple images of the entire family, as well as unlimited breakdowns of smaller family groupings, including the grandkids, grandkids with grandparents, adult children, and individual families.

This family was celebrating one of the grown sons being home on a short leave from the military. He's headed back now, and our prayers are with him!

I'm still proofing this session, so this is just a sneak peek - I love these images so much, I couldn't wait to share some of them. This is an awesome family! Little "C" is their first baby (not counting the two dogs in the last image!). They joined my Baby Steps Club, so I will have the honor of photographing Miss "C" throughout her first year. This daddy is so in love with his new little girl, he wants us to photograph her every month! He knows that this time is so precious, and is going to go by SO fast. I love my Baby Steps Club members! It's so fun getting to watch the babies grow! The full session will be posted in my online galleries next week.

I was happy to photograph Deborah & Jeff Bro's recent wedding. The ceremony took place at Deborah's parents' home in The Woodlands. It was a beautiful, intimate wedding with a wonderful atmosphere of joy!

The ceremony included a "Rose Ceremony". Jeff and Deborah included Deborah's daughters by giving them each a necklace as part of the ceremony.

We're Home!

My girls and I just spent five days on a Carnival Cruise to Cozumel. I highly recommend Carnival. They spoiled us rotten! I have to admit - it was wonderful getting away for a few days of R&R! Although it is good to be home, and I missed my hubby, it was still way too short!

Above: boarding day. My mom has been a member of the Lazy Daisies Garden Club in Southwest Houston since I was a little girl. The club is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, so the cruise was their celebration. My mom was sweet enough to include the girls and me. There were fourteen of us. The hats we're wearing in the above picture were our "uniform". Left to right - that's me, Kristin, Kayla, and my mom, Meda.

We stayed in a suite with an outside veranda. Awesome! Here, the girls are hanging out, enjoying the view of the BLUE ocean! Who knew? LOL!

There was a Build-a-Bear style workshop on board. Mom and the girls created Carnival bears for souvenirs.

We spent one way-too-short day in Cozumel.

One of the funnest highlights of our day in Mexico was getting to play with the parrots (below). The girls said the birds were surprisingly light-weight and very soft to touch. They were also very affectionate and gave the girls snuggles and "kisses".

It was an amazing trip with wonderful memories created for my girls and their grandmother. So special!!

Anyway, I'm back to work, and booking sessions for the summer! See you soon!

Summer Schedule: Sessions will be available after 2 pm, Thursdays-Saturdays. All sessions are on-location. For outdoor sessions, the last hour or so before sunset is the best light. Indoor sessions will depend on when your home gets the most natural, window light.

I was happy to hang out at the March of Dimes - March for Babies this morning. Nesting.com asked me to work at their booth, shooting portraits of the attendees. I photographed 150 portraits in 4 hours. Whew! I was worn out!! But, it was a lot of fun! Here's a quick sampling.

Baby #2

There must be something in the water. :) Several of my long-time, favorite clients are bringing Baby #2 to me! One of my favorite things is to photograph a baby throughout his or her first few years, watching that tiny baby grow into an independent preschooler! My next favorite thing is watching him or her become a big brother/sister!

This is Mr. "B". He's 9 months old now. I first photographed his big sister when she was a newborn. She was in my "Baby Steps" club, and now he is, as well. And, I have to say it - they are both just as cute as cute can be! It definitely runs in the family. :)

Fun Before & After

I have been blessed to have photographed Miss "B" since she was a newborn. She was about 8 or 9 months old when I shot this portrait. It is one of my all-time favorites and quickly became one of my "signature" portraits, defining what has become part of my style - bright, close-up, big eyes! Last week, I went to photograph her little brother's 9 month old session, and I couldn't resist catching this updated version of that favorite image. She's 2 1/2 now, but you can definitely tell it's the same bright-eyed, little beauty!

Okay - I'm a little late, but I hope your New Year is off to a good start!

I'm especially excited about 2008, because it is the FIVE YEAR anniversary of Deb Evans Photography! It's hard to believe, but I launched this photography biz full-time in January 2003! We've been so blessed to have worked with amazing people over the past five years. I've photographed hundreds of adorable children, families, and high school seniors. as well as more than 100 weddings.

From the first year, business has steadily grown and has been the sole support of my wonderful family, due to my husband's disability and inability to work. It hasn't always been easy - but it has always been an adventure! Most importantly, I'm blessed to earn a living doing something that I LOVE - photography is my gift, my art, and my passion. I give 100% credit and glory to God, but I am also so GRATEFUL to my awesome clients! You have stood by me, encouraged me, taught me, and inspired me from the beginning. I am looking so forward to continue working with you in the coming years, as well as having the opportunity to meet all of the new families that we will be working with in the coming months and years.

Galveston with my Girls!

Kayla and Kristin were a huge help this fall - they were my official "preschool wranglers" on six preschool shoots, plus they helped with packaging orders, and anything else I asked of them! They really worked hard! So, to reward them, we snuck away last month for a mini vacation in Galveston. (And, the weather was awesome!) Since they're little Super Models at heart, you know they wanted to pose for some awesome beach portraits!

44 Years and Still in Love!

My hubby and I have been married 15 years. Pretty impressive, but I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. & Mrs. Gilliam recently. They've been married 44 years and are still madly in love!
Mrs. G. emailed me a month or so ago and said "My husband and I have not had our pictures professionally done in years and years.....and years. Our families have fussed at us for a long time to get one done, and we've decided to go ahead and do it and give these portraits as Christmas gifts. Our reluctance to get one done is that so many photos of older folks look rigid and stiff and in some we have seen, the couple even look very uncomfortable! Your photography is incredible. From looking at your work, I am in hopes that you can create something that will be nice, relaxed and fun." Now that's a challenge I love!

I have to say that it was pretty easy, because they're a fun couple! I thoroughly enjoyed the session! Here's what Mrs. G. said after she saw the images: "You are in the right business for sure. Love 'em all. I don't know if Jerry or I ever have any pictures of either of us where it looks like we are actually having fun, and I thank you for that."

Their grandsons came along for moral support!

"Anything you want..." that's what my sweet hubby said to me before my birthday. Famous last words! My husband enjoys having his picture taken just about as much as most of your husbands, so I took advantage!

"ALL I want is for you to let me photograph you with the girls," I said. (The last portraits of the 3 of them together were about 4 years ago!) Woohoo! He went for it - even took me to dinner at Saltgrass Steakhouse first! He also let me get some quick shots of him alone, and the girls snapped a few of us together. What a wonderful birthday!

New Angel in Heaven

Some of you may know that I volunteer my photography services with the American Child Photographers Charity Guild. I was blessed to photograph a precious boy named Walker Woolery a few months back. I was heartbroken to learn today that little Walker has lost his bout with leukemia. He is now in the loving arms of Jesus. Please say a prayer for the Walker family.

This was a really fun session! I first photographed the older children when the sister was still a baby! It's been fun watching them grow, and they were excited to introduce me to their new brother!

I think the key to a great children's session is letting them just be kids!

What a special session this was! I photographed this little beauty's parents' wedding a few years back. They are such a sweet couple, I was so excited when they contacted me about photographing their new family. I first photographed Peyton when she was six months old. She's 15 months old now, and a real, little beauty!

She started out a bit shy...

But, it didn't take long for her to warm up...

Her mom was so excited to see the images, she sent me this sweet note - "Oh my gosh. Seriously, this is the best I've seen yet. What incredible work you do Deb, I had tears in my eyes watching this slideshow. How am I going to pick?? Deb...it's just outstanding. Thank you so much, and we'll (somehow) put an order together for you soon."

Conroe's own "Crighton Kidz" is showcasing their annual production this weekend. Opening night for "WESTWARD WHOA!" was last night, and they are also performing today at 3 pm. My daughter Kayla has been involved with Crighton Kidz for four years. She adores the group and plans a career as a Broadway actress. This was Kristin's first year with Crighton Kidz. She also had a wonderful experience with the show and has made many new friends.

I was thrilled to provide the photography for the production. The images are online for viewing and ordering. Here's the website:

My office will be closed the week of April 22nd so that I can attend Texas School, the #1 professional photography school in the country (sponsored by Texas Professional Photographers of America)! It happens once a year out in College Station. I will be studying for a full week with an amazing photographer named Lori Nordstrom. I am so excited about this great opportunity!

I'm booking sessions for May and June, so if you want to get on the schedule, let me know! I will still be checking my email throughout the week.

Okay, if you read my blog, then you know by now, they're all my favorites! But, these little guys are special.

Cole was one of my first "Baby Club" babies back in 2003. I photographed him three times over his first year, and his Mommy, Adria, became more like a friend than a client. She has offered me advice about my business over the years, referred many clients to me, and just been a lot of fun to get to know. Little Carter was born last year, and I've had the pleasure of celebrating his first year in portraits as well.

My daughters and I went to deliver an order and visit with Adria and the boys this afternoon, so I thought I'd better put them on my blog. (Adria likes her boys front and center on my websites! LOL!) She is one of the reasons that I love my job so much!

Senior Cuties!

Annual Bluebonnet Portraits

I've been photographing my daughters in the bluebonnets every year since they were born! We just about missed it this year. My schedule has been so crazy, and the weather has been so uncooperative; the bluebonnets have come and almost gone already! But, after church on Easter Sunday, we headed to our favorite bluebonnet spot in The Woodlands. The girls love posing for pics! I can't believe how big they're getting. I couldn't help but think of our first bluebonnet portraits, when they were just little bitty things. Aren't they pretty? They take after their Daddy! LOL!

On the way home, we saw this beautiful field of yellow wildflowers, so the girls wanted to stop and grab some more shots.

Annual Tea Party

The girls and I have an annual tea party with my mom. Now, this is no ordinary tea party. It involves costumes, games, and all-around silliness. We started when the girls were 4 and 5. My mom keeps expecting them to tell her they're too old for the tea party, but they are already planning the '08 and '09 parties! This year's theme was The '80s. Our tea was actually Tang (big in the '80s - did you know you could still buy Tang? I didn't.) We had hot pockets for lunch (introduced in the '80s), listened to '80s music. Dressed up in '80s clothes (a quick look through my high school yearbook helped with that, plus watching VH1!)

And, oh yeah -- Papa Smurf was there.

The Smurfs TV show was huge in the '80s. I could NOT stand the Smurfs. My college room-mate my freshman year watched the Smurfs every Saturday morning, and it drove me absolutely bonkers - a fact that I had long forgotten, but my Mom remembered. So, she made sure we had Smurfs at our tea party. For some reason, she thought it was SOOOO funny! LOL!

Next year's theme is Tea Party 3000 - (as in - the year 3000!)

I had another really fun session recently that I'd like to share with you! Whenever I photograph a baby, I always include family photos, Mommy & Me, Daddy & Me, any siblings, etc. in the session.

What a face! This little guy is a total charmer!

I ended up doing a lot of color for this session - some sessions just "scream" color for me, and others want to be more black & white. Here's one of the black & white shots that I did. I like black & white because it strips the image down to pure emotion/expression.

Proud, big sister! Don't you just LOVE that red hair! She's a little beauty - and SO sweet!

Once again, these images were all shot in the family's living room, using just window light!

Coolest Wedding Band...

NiteBeat was the band for Jessica & Mike's wedding (See the next post for more about that.) I wanted to put a separate post for NiteBeat because I liked them so much. As you can imagine, I go to a lot of weddings and hear a lot of wedding music. These guys were amazing. They perform a wide variety of music, but for this wedding, they played a lot of Motown and other "oldies but goodies", which is a kind of music that I love. The crowd was rocking! Lots of dancing! Lots of laughing! The lead singer got down into the crowd and everybody was having an awesome time! If you're looking for a band for your special event, be sure to check them out. Jessica & Mike

I was blessed to photograph Jessica & Mike's wedding at the Grand Fontenot Mansion in Spring. If you haven't checked this place out, you need to. It's family-owned and available for weddings and other special events, but they also have a day spa, afternoon teas, and a b & b!

Anyway, Jessica & Mike are an awesome couple. The wedding was beautiful. I had so much fun. I just love it when I can come home from a wedding and say "Wow! That was fun!" instead of feeling like I just got off a long day at work! I have the best job ever!

See... I wasn't kidding! Lots of cute little boys lately... Here's another favorite!

All these little guys in the next few posts were photographed using just window light! That's my favorite way to work. I do all my work on location, so I go to my clients' homes for the sessions. I bring a couple of backdrops with me and set up near a big window. I don't even need that much room. One time I had to literally squeeze in between a bed and the wall to get my shots, but they looked great - you'd never know! LOL! This family had the perfect set-up. We shot the session in the parents' bedroom. It was huge, and they had the most amazing windows! It was awesome! See, how soft the light is and how great the family looks!?

The last time I saw this little cutie pie, he was just sitting up good!! Now, he's walking all over! He is SO cute! I loved seeing him and his family again!

I was VERY impressed that ALL of little cutie's grandparents came to pose together for a family portrait. With a loving, supportive family like that, this little baby will have it made!! I'm already looking forward to seeing them again!!

Fun Storyboards!

They are 10"x20" and will be used to decorate the children's bedrooms. Nothing could make a child feel more special than having artwork that is all about them -- especially when it's artwork that is decorating their personal space -- their bedrooms!

The new issue of the online magazine "Pictures" is now available. I am listed in the photographers' directory, listing some of the top children's photographers in the country! There are some great articles in the magazine that you will want to check out, too!

CFPA Conference

I just returned from the Child & Family Photographers of America conference. Lucky for me, it was held down the road in Austin, Texas. My family lived in Austin for six years (in fact, both of my daughters were born there). We've been here in Cut-n-Shoot for seven years, so it was fun to go back for a visit. It had been awhile, although not much had changed!

The conference was incredible. I had the opportunity to take classes from some of the greatest child photographers in America. I brought home a notebook filled with my notes, plus bags and bags of materials. The coolest thing was that out of FIVE amazing photographers, all of whom specialize in children's photography, each one had a distinctly different approach to their businesses. I am fired up!! Be on the lookout for some fun changes to Deb Evans Photography as I start to adopt some of the cool things that I learned at the conference. You're gonna love it!!

Ages & Stages

I hope that everyone is thawing out! I made it home from San Antonio before the ice hit. My family and I have been sticking close to home today. It never did get much above freezing here today (east of Conroe, Texas). Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit warmer, and the girls and I are headed to lunch with my mom tomorrow in Old Town Spring, one of our favorite places!

I've been doing a little updating on my website. I added a new page called "Ages & Stages". It talks about the importance of photographing a baby's first year of life. From the newborn to toddler stages, I talk about what I look for during the various stages and show examples.

Although I photograph everything from babies to weddings in my business, I do specialize in Baby's First Year portraits, so this page gives a lot of fun examples of that.

Greetings from the PPA Convention!

Hello!

I'm writing this from the Professional Photographers of America's national convention in San Antonio. How lucky for me that it is so close to home this year! I'm so excited to get to spend time with thousands of other pro photographers learning new skills and sharing ideas! I hope to get new ideas to share with my clients in the coming year.

I want to share another note that I received from a recent bride, Adeli, aka the new Mrs. Cardenas!

The pictures are incredibly beautiful! I cannot stop looking at them! You definitely captured the tender moments. I will make sure to refer you to all my friends and collegues. I have been showing off my pictures here at work so you should be getting more business soon. A million thanks Deb!!!! I cried and laughed!!! Thank you for making it so special for us! :)

Well, this little one was a bit of a surprise!

I was already booked to photograph this multi-generational Family Reunion Portrait Session the day after Christmas. At the time, this baby wasn't due until January! But, apparently, he wanted to make sure he was included in the family portrait, because he showed up early! After we did the regular family stuff, I was happy to photograph his first baby portraits!

I found a really cool software program that publishes album pages onto a web slide show. I've been playing around with it, and published a couple of my favorite albums onto my website.

Sweet Note!

I was happy to receive a really sweet note right before Christmas from one of my October brides, Jesse Baust. Here's what she wrote:
